Breakthrough in Diabetes: First Patient Functionally Cured of Type 1 Diabetes with Stem Cell Therapy

A major milestone in regenerative medicine has just been achieved. A 25-year-old woman in China has become the first person in the world to be functionally cured of Type 1 diabetes using a new stem cell therapy. For over a year, she has lived completely insulin-free, thanks to a pioneering treatment developed by researchers at Peking University and Tianjin First Central Hospital.
The Procedure
Cell Reprogramming
Doctors began by collecting the patient’s fat cells and reprogramming them into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). These powerful cells can transform into nearly any type of cell in the body.
Islet Cell Differentiation
The iPSCs were then carefully guided to develop into islet cells, the specialized cells in the pancreas responsible for producing insulin.
Transplantation
Finally, the newly created insulin-producing cells were implanted into the patient’s abdominal tissue, where they successfully engrafted and began releasing insulin naturally.
The Results
Insulin Independence
Within just 75 days, the patient no longer needed insulin injections—a condition she has maintained for over a year.
Stable Blood Sugar
Her blood glucose levels remained consistently within a healthy range, with more than 98% of her time spent in the target zone.
No Rejection
Because the cells came from her own body, there was no immune rejection, a major advantage over donor-based transplants.
Why This Matters
This achievement marks one of the most promising advancements yet in the treatment of Type 1 diabetes, a condition that has required patients to depend on insulin injections for life. By using a patient’s own cells, researchers have shown the possibility of creating personalized, rejection-free therapies that restore the body’s natural insulin production.
It is a breakthrough that brings hope to millions of people worldwide living with diabetes and demonstrates the immense potential of stem cell therapy in transforming chronic disease care.
